Chardonnay

The most popular white wine sold in America and the most commonly
produced wine grape in the world, Chardonnay is a full, flavorful wine.

Chardonnay wines receive a lot of their distinctive flavor from the oak barrels
in which they’re aged.  Many people mistakenly believe that all wine is aged
in oak barrels, but many wines get their oaky flavors from the addition of
wood chips instead of being aged in actual oak barrels.  There are several very
drinkable wines that receive their oaky flavors this way, but they typically don’
t age too well and therefore must be drank young.

Chardonnay grapes are grown on relatively low-maintenance vines that can
flourish in a variety of climates. Because of this, Chardonnay sees very high
crop yields worldwide, contributing to its popularity as America’s number one
white wine.  Since it is so abundant, it’s common to find a good bottle of
Chardonnay for $10-12.

Chardonnays taste of an array of flavors, including buttery oak overtones
imparted by the oak barrels to fruit flavors of apple, pear and citrus. Aside from
being bottled as a varietal, Chardonnay is an important component of
sparkling wines and Champagne.

Chardonnay can be paired with a variety of foods depending on the style of
wine and the region in which it was produced.
