India Pale Ale
India Pale Ale is a style of beer featuring a greater level of hops and alcohol than traditional Pale Ales. The hop flavor is typically medium to high, gold or straw, and the beer has a very fragrant, hoppy aroma.
IPAs were created in the 1700s, a time in which British troops and civilians in India desired English beer. After a long and demanding voyage through the rough waters of South Africa, beer often arrived flat and sour. To combat this problem, British brewers infused beer with extra alcohol and hops to preserve the beer and prevent the growth of bacteria during long sea voyages.
The end result? Delicious IPAs, very similar to what you see in your local bottle shop today.
Common Examples: Harpoon IPA Red Hook IPA Anchor Liberty Ale Dogfish Head 60/90 Minute IPA Centennial IPA
